One of the most visited destinations is Spain and its neighboring Portugal, so the question of how to get from Madrid to Lisbon arises quite often.

How can you get there

Transport links between European countries are well established; major cities are connected by air, rail and bus transport. It is also possible to get from city to city in a rented or own car. The distance between Lisbon and Madrid is 630 kilometers, which is about 7 hours of land or 3 hours of air travel.

Travel by train

The country's railway system is represented by trains of various comfort levels and directions. Super-high-speed trains from the national carrier RENFE connect twenty provinces of Spain - they are labeled AVE and reach speeds of up to 350 km / h.

There are also high-speed trains of the middle category, designated with the letters MD, which provide communication between neighboring regions - these include the Talgo, Altaria, Alaris, Alvia, Expreso models (each for its own region).

The Cercanias category represents electric trains that serve the local transport network of large cities and their suburbs - Tranvia and Automotor.

Railways in Spain also have the Trenhotel and Estrella deluxe trains for night service. In this case, the first belongs to the budget class, and the second offers luxury service.

If you are planning to save on hotel accommodation, it is the Trenhotel night train that connects Madrid and Lisbon.

The train departs from Madrid Chamartin station daily at 21:43, arrives at the Gare do Oriente station in Lisbon at 07:20 in the morning, and is on the way for 10 hours 37 minutes.

There are four classes of ticket booking available on the trains:

  • tourist;
  • tourist superior;
  • Business Class;
  • grand class.

Tourist class ticket costs € 34. For this price, you get a soft recliner chair and the ability to recharge your gadgets.

A ticket to a compartment carriage of an improved tourist class costs 85.5 euros. Here all passengers are given sheets, blankets and pillows. One compartment can have either 4 or 6 seats - it all depends on the popularity of the destination.

A business class ticket costs 148 euros and provides access to a double compartment with comfortable shelves, a washbasin and air conditioning.

Tickets for the grand class cost 180.5 euros, which covers travel in a single or double compartment (your choice) with a private bathroom, shower and wide berth.

Bus ride

Those planning to save on travel costs can take advantage of the bus travel. Buses in Spain are represented by carriers FlixBus, Alsa and InterNorte.

Alsa in 2021 offers to purchase tickets for the same route from 41 euros with a refund option or for 26 euros only with the right to exchange - you can find a suitable flight on the website www.alsa.es.

FlixBus will have the lowest ticket prices - only € 10 for a day flight and € 25 for a night flight. You can purchase them on the website www.flixbus.ru.

FlixBus buses leave three times daily. Every Saturday, a 10:30 AM flight is added to the schedule for € 10.

Travel time is about 8 hours, the ticket price includes the price of one piece of hand luggage, which will go on a special shelf or under the seat in front, and one piece of bulky luggage.

For children under 14 years old, a 30% discount is provided; this carrier does not provide tickets for preferential categories. You can buy tickets both online on the official website of the company and at the ticket offices at Madrid's Méndez Álvaro bus station, also known as the South.

How to get there by plane

Traveling by plane is the fastest way to get from Madrid to Lisbon. Aircraft of low-cost airlines Iberia, EasyJet, AirEuropa, AirPortugal fly between these cities.

You can buy tickets for a suitable date on the low-cost airlines website poisk.loukosterov.ru. If, when searching, you are guided not by a specific departure date, but by the cost of an air ticket, then you can find cheap offers within 30 euros. The average cost of air travel is 50 euros in Economy Class, without the right to carry baggage.

The direct flight takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes and departs from Madrid's Adolfo Suárez Madrid – Barajas Airport. The planes arrive at the Aeroporto Humberto Delgado in Lisbon.

You can get to Madrid's Barajas airport from the city center by bus number 203 (the duration of the flight is 40 minutes) or along the C4 metro line with a change at the Nuevos Ministerios station on line 8 to the final airport (the duration of the flight is 35 minutes). You can get to the airport in Lisbon by bus number 708 (the duration of the flight is 45 minutes) or along the Vd and Vm metro lines with a change at the Alameda station (the airport will be the final one).

Road by car

This way of getting around provides complete freedom of action - you can stop along the way, explore the surroundings, spend the night and dine at roadside restaurants.

You can rent a car in Spain with a rental company, for example, Rentalcars. If you do not plan to return to Madrid, then use the bookingcar.eu aggregator, as Rentalcars does not support car returns from Lisbon. You will be offered various booking options, the cost of which depends on the class of the car and the duration of the trip.

An economy class car for five passengers will cost 550 euros per day of booking. This price will include limitation of the renter's liability for theft and breakdowns, anti-theft protection, local taxes, unlimited mileage, full fuel tank and vehicle support.

If you wish, you can take a deductible for a car in the amount of 1400 euros - in this case, you will be responsible for the vehicle only with this insured amount.

Also, a deposit for a car is blocked on a bank card (from 100 to 600 euros), it becomes available together with the amount of the franchise after the car is returned to the rental point. Another condition is that you must return the car with a full tank, otherwise the cost of the missing liters will be deducted from the amount of the deposit.

The shortest route from Madrid to Lisbon is 609 km, the cost of fuel (approximately 40 liters) is 55 euros, to this amount must also be added a toll road commission of 18.5 euros.

  • Departure from Madrid is carried out by the Paseo de Santa María de la Cabeza motorway, then you need to exit onto the A-42 motorway and after a kilometer and a half turn onto the M-40 / E-90.
  • From M-40, a turn is made to A-5 / M-90 (speed is limited to 120 km / h), then more than 400 km of the track runs along the IP7 highway.
  • At the end of the highway, you pay to enter Portugal, then follow the Rua Prior do Crato road until you reach Lisbon.
