How to get from Munich to Hanover: travel to Lower Saxony

Hanover is the largest city in Lower Saxony. Tourists come here to admire the picturesque historical quarters and the unique Serengeti Zoo, in which wild animals roam freely around the visitors. There are direct flights from Munich by airplanes, high-speed trains and buses. By car, you can get from one city to another by convenient autobahns. Bus ride

There is a direct bus service between Munich and Hanover operated by Flixbus. There are only three flights per day: at 7.10, 9.15 and 20.05. Duration of the trip from 8 h. 50 min. up to 11 h. 05 min.

Buses leave from Munich Central Bus Station, which is located at Arnulfstraße 21, next to the S-bahn Hackerbrücke station.

The cost of tickets when purchased at the box office of the bus station is from 40 €. But it is possible that they will not be on the next flight, because buses in Germany are a popular and inexpensive form of transport, and tickets for them are quickly sold out.

For a trip to Hannover, it is better to book places in advance. This can be done on the official website of the carrier company. When choosing the English version of the site, look for flights departing from Munich central bus station.

When buying tickets on the eve of the day of departure, you will pay 26-30 € for them, and when booking in advance - 23 €.

In addition to direct flights, Flixbus launches several daily connecting flights in Leipzig, Frankfurt, Karlsruhe, Berlin, Nuremberg, Bremen and Dresden. Their duration is from 12 hours to 13 hours 30 minutes, the cost when buying tickets on the day of the trip is 36-42 €, with prior booking 33-38 €. Flixbus does not provide discounts on children's tickets.

If you have oversized baggage with you weighing between 20 and 30 kg, you will have to pay an additional 9 €. The transportation of a bicycle will cost the same amount (buses have special luggage compartments for cycling). Baby strollers and wheelchairs can be brought free of charge, but luggage space for them must be reserved in advance, at the same time as booking tickets.

Buses arrive at Hannover Central Bus Station (Hannover ZOB), which is located on Rundestraße next to the train station.

Travel by train

Intercity express trains run direct from Munich to Hanover every hour from 4.13 to 22.52. The travel time is from 4 hours 11 minutes to 4 hours 53 minutes.

You can view the train timetable on the German railways website Deutsche Bahn, which offers services not only in non-German, but also in other languages. If you are using the English version, when entering the origin and destination data, use the English rather than German variants of city names, respectively: Munich, not München, and Hanover instead of Hannover.

Travel by car

The distance from Munich to Hanover is 660 km if you take the A9 motorway, and 636 km if you take the A9 and A7 motorways. Travel time will range from 5 hours 40 minutes to 7 hours, depending on the driver's qualifications.

For the trip, you will use about 70 liters of gasoline at a price of 1.2-1.4 €, that is, you will spend 84-98 €. During the trip, you will need to refuel your car at least 2 times.   • All roads, including the Autobahns, are free to drive.
  • In cities, it is allowed to drive a car no faster than 50 km / h, in safe traffic zones (residential areas, near schools) - 30 km / h.
  • On regional roads outside settlements - up to 100 km / h. The recommended speed on the autobahns is 130 km / h, there are no restrictions.
  • The driver and all passengers are required to wear seat belts.
  • Children under 12 years old with a height of less than 1 m 50 cm can only ride in a special child seat.
  • The permissible concentration of alcohol in the blood is up to 0.5 ppm.
  • Any violation of the rules is punishable by large fines or deprivation of a driver's license. Penalty for incorrect parking - 15-35 €, driving at a red traffic light - 100-200 €, non-observance of the distance - 100-400 €, speeding - 20-600 €.

You should know that Hanover is located in the ecological zone (Umwelt zone). It is allowed to enter only cars whose engines meet certain emission standards and have green stickers on the windshield, which confirm this.

Decals can be obtained from the technical supervision service, from car repair shops or from the website of the Land Office. The deadline for the online application is 10 days. The cost of the service is from 5 to 12 €. When entering the eco-zone without a sticker, a fine of 40 €, even if the car meets the necessary technical requirements, and 80 € - if it does not.

Rent a car in Munich

If you don't want to use public transport, you can rent a car in Munich. Rental services are provided by branches of international companies Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt and local companies.

To arrange a lease, you must have an international driver's license and pay a security deposit (200-1200 €, depending on the class of the car). Additionally, many companies charge a fee of 20-30 euros for returning a car in another city. If necessary, child seats and eco-stickers can be borrowed from the rental point.

Hitch

The Blablacar service will help you find drivers who will take you as travel companions from Munich to Hanover. There are not too many offers for this direction, but two or three cars to Hanover can be found every day. Services are provided not only for single tourists, but also for companies up to 3 people. Traveling by plane

The airport is located 30 km north-east of Munich at Flughafen München GmbH, Nordallee, 25. It is served by S1 and S8 city trains, as well as Lufthansa buses (from the stops near Central Station and the Nordfriedhof underground station).

Buses leave for the airport every 15 minutes. If you wish, you can order a transfer from the city to the airport, for a taxi you will pay 69 €.

The plane arrives at Hannover-Langenhagen airport, which is located in the town of Langenhagen, 11 km from the city. There are S-Bahn and bus stations near Terminal C of the airport.

You can get to the center of Hannover by electric trains of the S5 line: travel time 15 minutes, cost 3.30 €. Bus 450 will take you to the Bahnhof Mitte stop, from where you can continue on the S4 electric trains.
