Gdansk Lech Walesa Airport is the third largest Polish airport serving domestic and international flights. It got its name in honor of the former Polish president. The airport is located near the central cities of the Tricity agglomeration (over 1 million people) - at a distance of 23 km from Gdynia, 10 km from Gdansk and Sopot. Due to its proximity to Kaliningrad (176 km), it is popular with tourists from the Russian Federation.

About the airport

The airport, operating around the clock, receives daily direct flights from more than a dozen of the largest Polish and foreign airlines. In addition to regular flights, the airport also accepts charter flights. Today, the Gdansk terminal occupies the third place (14.69%) in Poland in terms of the volume of constantly increasing passenger traffic.

In 2021, two million people were served, in 2016 - about 4 million, in 2021 the number of passengers exceeded 4.6 million.

It is planned that in 2018 the airport will receive more than 5 million people. All the prerequisites for this are there. In the 1st quarter of 2021, 982,875 thousand passengers were served, which is 11.8% more than in the same period in 2021.

Airlines and destinations

Airport loading is provided by European air carriers, including two Polish companies: AirBaltic, Finnair, FlyEgypt, Icelandair, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Lufthansa, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Polish Airlines LOT, Ryanair, SAS Scandinavian Airlines, SprintAir, Travel Service , Wizz Air.

Thanks to the presence of the two largest low-cost airlines (Wizz Air and Ryanair), flights from Gdansk are made to many capitals and major cities of the European Union.

  • The airport serves flights to Warsaw, Krakow, Wroclaw and Radom. This is mainly done by Polish companies (SprintAir, LOT Polish Airlines) and Ryanair.
  • Flights to Scandinavian cities (Bergen, Copenhagen, Oslo-Gardermoen, Stockholm) are operated by the Scandinavian Airlines System, and to Germany (Frankfurt am Main, Munich) - by Lufthansa. Finnair operates flights to Helsinki and Norwegian Airlines to Oslo.
  • On the planes of the Irish Ryanair you can fly to Athens, Tel Aviv, Alicante, Vaxjo, Belfast, Bergamo. This carrier also operates flights to England, Italy, Sweden and other European countries, and within Poland - to Krakow and Wroclaw.
  • The Hungarian airline Wizz Air also has an extensive geography of flights, including those operating flights to Ukraine - Lviv and Kiev.

In total, the airport serves about seventy destinations, their number is increasing annually. The cheapest flights are from Ryanair, Wizz Air, charter flights are relatively inexpensive.

In summer, Gdansk offers charter flights to cities such as Malaga, Dubrovnik, Seville and Burgas. You can fly to Turkey, Tunisia and Egypt. Canary Islands, Rhodes, Corfu are available.

Airport terminals

The airport has two terminals - T1 and T2. The first two-level terminal has been operating since 1974, when the airport was put into operation. Located west of T1, the modern T2 has been operating since 2021. This functionally designed terminal has four levels - three above ground and one underground. The carrying capacity of T2 is 2.5 million people per year, but in the future it can be modularly expanded.

Terminal 1 serves flights to states outside the Schengen area. Its arrival area is located on the first floor and its departure area on the second.

T2 provides departures and arrivals from Schengen countries. For this, the airport has 20 check-in counters and 10 boarding gates.

Travel arrangement

Before entering the departure lounge, passengers check in for the flight and check in their luggage. Check-in counters are marked with carriers' logos, they indicate the destination, flight number and departure time. Check-in, baggage registration takes place at the time set by the airline.

The carrier is responsible for the safety of checked baggage. The passenger is allowed to transport things free of charge, the weight of which does not exceed the established norms. For example, with a Rineair ticket, you can take two pieces of hand luggage with you, a large bag - 55 × 40 × 20 cm up to 10 kg, and a small one - 35 × 20 × 20 cm.

If the weight and dimensions are exceeded, the baggage must be booked in advance. It will be taken for an additional fee.

Without booking, things will be transported only if there are appropriate technical capabilities.

Services

The terminals offer passengers a variety of services. There are shops, cafes, a post office and children's playgrounds. While waiting for your flight, you can have a good rest in the lounges, exchange money (the exchange office works from 06.00 to 02.00), connect via Wi-Fi to the Internet (15 minutes free). As a disadvantage, we mention that there are no luggage storage facilities.

Smokers can use special smoking rooms; there are smoking areas near the entrances. For mothers with small children, there are baby changing rooms. Duty-free shops are available to passengers on international flights.

Holy Mass is celebrated every Sunday at 10.00 in the airport chapel. The chapel is located on the 1st floor of T2. You can get into it from the main hall.

There are several car rental agencies on the ground floor in the lobby. You can rent a car directly at the airport, book it in advance by phone or online. E-mail addresses, telephone numbers are available on the airport website in the "Car rental" section. Agencies work daily.

The airport provides assistance to people with disabilities.

For this purpose, a daily duty of employees of the GDN Airport Services company has been organized (from 05.00 to 24.00). Assistance for disabled people departing from the airport should be provided within ten minutes after the call, for those arriving - within five minutes. When buying tickets, you must inform the airline about the need to provide such a service.

The entrance area to the airport, called Kiss and Fly, is paid. It is allowed to stop for free for ten minutes, twenty minutes parking will cost 20 PLN. For longer parking of vehicles, special parking lots are equipped - short-term P1 and P2 (up to a day), for a long-term - P4, P5. The number of parking spaces is constantly increasing.

In February 2021, Interparking Polska put into operation the P6 - Cheapest parking lot intended for long-term car stays. Now it has 600 parking spaces. Subsequently, 1250 cars will be accommodated here.

Payment for 7 days of car stay - 33 PLN. In April 2021, a new short-term parking lot P3 was opened, the cost of parking on it is from PLN 4 per hour. The parking lots meet modern standards, and you can book a place on them online through the official website in Russian.

Shopping and food

Coffee is offered at the Tak! Coffee ”(SO! Coffee). You can have a bite to eat at the Flying Bistro. The cafe is open from 4.00 to 22.30.

In the Schengen departure hall of Terminal T2, you can eat at McDonald's. The Coffee Corner will delight you with good coffee (5.30-22.30).

In the same hall, delicious meals are offered round the clock in the Furore restaurant, and in the Plamya restaurant (04.00-22.00) a delicious lunch and dinner await the visitor.

There is also a grocery market (04.00–22.00).

The terminal's numerous shops offer visitors all kinds of goods.

Passengers residing permanently outside the EU, leaving the European Union, can recover VAT on goods purchased in Poland at the airport. To do this, you must have a properly executed Tax Free document.

How to get to Gdańsk Airport

Address: Slowackiedo 200, Gdansk (Rębiechowo). It is convenient to get there by your own or rented car. In the GPS navigator you need to enter: ul. Słowackiego 200, 80-298 Gdansk ".

Coming from Gdansk, you need to take the ring road and, heading along the E28 towards Gdynia, get to IKEA (shopping center), pass it, at the fork, turn left (at the sign "Gdańsk Airport") and take road DW472 to the airport ...

There are regular buses to the airport from Gdansk - no. 110 from the station Wrzeszcz, no. 210 and night no. 3 from the railway station. The trip will cost PLN 3.80. Travel time is 30-40 minutes.

Also, you can get to the airport by bus No. 122 from the Sopot railway station, No. 4A from the Gdynia railway station.

High-speed trains run to the airport at intervals of thirty minutes from the Gdansk-Wrzeszcz station (Gdansk-airport-Gdynia) and every hour from the Gdansk railway station (to Kartuzy). The stop is located near T2, connected to the terminal by a special tunnel.

Conclusion

Due to its convenient location, Gdansk Airport serves three cities - Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia. It is also close to the Russian Kaliningrad.
