There are two international airports in Poland. One of them is a former military airport, now rebuilt for the needs of civil aviation, Warsaw / Modlin airport. Since 2021, it has become the base for the Ryanair carrier. The specificity of this airport lies in the fact that it was originally created for flights of low-cost airlines (low-cost airlines) offering the lowest possible ticket prices.

History of Warsaw / Modlin airport

Warsaw / Modlin Airport, which was designed in 1937, is located 40 km from the center of the Polish capital. During the occupation of Poland by German troops it was used as a military base for the Luftwaffe. After World War II, it was converted into a training base for aircraft and helicopter pilots.

In 2005, an investment plan was developed to convert the facility to a civilian airport, and in 2006 the Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority gave permission to do so. In 2008, the Polish government gave the go-ahead for modernization, and in 2021 Warsaw / Modlin airport was officially registered with the Civil Aviation Authority.

The construction work lasted for two years. In addition to the passenger terminal, the new airport should also have CAT II ILS navigation lights (modern high-intensity approach lighting system), a 24-hour loading track (2500 x 45 m), DVOR / DME system (integrated radio navigation system for aeronautical equipment for aircraft), a plane designed for 12 positions with a simple C-code for aircraft (international aircraft classification system).

The airport was officially opened with international status in 2021.

Cheaper to operate than the airport. F. Chopin, he helped unload the country's main air harbor, serving most of the low-cost point-to-point flights.

Popular destinations and airlines

Today, aircraft depart from Warsaw / Modlin to 45 cities around the world: Oslo, Brussels, London, Tel Aviv, Belfast and others. The most popular destinations are Europe, Scandinavia, North Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and Russia.

Currently, the air harbor accepts all types of existing passenger flights:

  • internal;
  • charter;
  • international.

International transportation services are provided by the only major airline Ryanair.

Infrastructure and scheme of Warsaw / Modlin airport

The modern airport infrastructure includes everything necessary for a comfortable stay of passengers waiting to board the plane: waiting rooms, toilets, payment terminals and ATMs, parking lots, a duty-free shop and even an aircraft museum of the 1930s.

You can check in your belongings, and in a restaurant or cafe you can dine or relax with a cup of coffee. Passengers with children will appreciate the availability of slot machines.

Those interested can visit the chapel. Throughout the airport, free access to wireless Internet Wi-Fi is open (subject to downloading the PDF file Hello Modlin from the official website).

Passenger terminal

The passenger terminal of Warsaw / Modlin Airport has two ground floors, one underground technical floor and occupies a total of 13,380 m². The author of the project is Stefan Kurylovich, a professor at the Warsaw Polytechnic University.

The design of the building uses the motives of the aircraft fuselage and its wing. The simple shape of the building was chosen for a reason: in the future, such a solution will harmoniously increase the area due to new modules. The color scheme of the terminal premises is orange and gray.
