Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany, which is also a city-state according to the administrative structure of the Federal Republic of Germany. Given the scale of the city's infrastructure, many tourists find it difficult to find the necessary route. Our article will help you figure out how to get from Hamburg to the airport by all available means.

Hamburg transport system

Once in Hamburg, you have a wide range of different modes of transport at your disposal. The city offers both traditional car rides and public transport: trains, buses. Travelers who care about the environment and their health can use the bike rental. Fuhlsbuettel Airport is located 10 kilometers from the city center.

We go by train

On the territory of the airport there are not only representative offices of airlines and hotels, but also the railway station from which trains leave. The easiest way is to first get to the Hauptbahnhof railway station, which is located at Hachmannplatz, 16, and continue your route by any means of transport.

You can use the S – bahn surface metro: the green S1 line at any station on this line. The S-Bahn city train is part of the U-Bahn underground, with line crossings at the main station. Separately, it is worth mentioning that the doors in some carriages are opened manually - do not miss your stop.

Listen carefully to the announcements in the train carriage in order to be informed about the reshaping of the train, maintenance work and possible delays in the arrival of the train.

Electric trains operate from 03.51 am to 1 am, from Friday to Sunday there are also night flights.

The first S-Bahn train arrives at the airport at 4:29 hrs, the last for the city center leaves at 12:13 hrs.

During the day, routes leave every 10 minutes, and travel time from central Hamburg takes a short amount of time.

For example, in order to get from Dammtor station to Hamburg airport, you first need to take S21 (red line) to the central station and from there take S1 to Ohlsdorf, where the train splits, and the first 3 carriages go to the airport.

If necessary, you can transfer to the separation station. The total journey time will take 25 minutes.

You can buy a ticket at ticket offices, red terminals and on the carrier's website s-bahn-hamburg.de. The train fare is 3.30 euros.

Getting there by bus

The bus service operates around the clock. It should be borne in mind that there are currently no direct buses from the city center to the airport during the day, so you will have to go with transfers. At night, direct buses run through the main bus station. The bus stop is located close to the airport terminals and is easily reachable on foot. The interval of movement is 10 minutes during the day and 30 minutes at night. Let's consider some bus routes to the airport:

  • No. 112 to the HBF / Spitalerstraße station - no. 37 to Habichtstraße (Mitte) - no. 39 to the airport;
  • No. 112 to the Stephansplatz station - No. 5 to the Siemersplatz station - No. 39 to the airport;
  • No. 5 to Gärtnerstraße - no. 25 to Eppendorfer Marktplatz - no. 39 to the airport;
  • No. 23 to Straßburger Straße station - no. 39 to the airport;
  • No. 21 to the Elbe-Einkaufszentrum station - No. 39 to the airport;
  • # 262 to Wandsbek Markt [Ankunft] station - # 39 to the airport;
  • No. 162 to the station Kuehnstraße (Ost) - No. 27 Poppenbüttel (Stormarnplatz) -No. 174 to Preetzer Straße + 14 minutes walk to the airport;

  • No. 3 to Rathausmarkt - No. 6 to Mühlenkamp / Hofweg-No. 606 (night flight) to the airport.

The number of directions of movement allows you to reach any part of the city around the clock. Most buses have an information board where the route details are broadcast. You can buy cheap (5.4 EUR) tickets and passes at hvv.de.

Taxi ride

A taxi allows you to go immediately from anywhere in the city without waiting for public transport. The cost will be 35-40 euros and may increase due to the following factors:

  • excess of the set amount of luggage -1 euro;
  • presence of more than 4 passengers - 5 euros;
  • night tariff after 23:00 - an increase in the cost of travel by 10%;
  • transportation of children (you need a car with a child seat for each child);
  • the presence of animals;
  • you need a car adapted for sedentary people;
  • a car of a higher class and roominess is required.

Be sure to check this information on the carrier's website. As a rule, European companies provide a high level of service and will always help make your trip more comfortable.

Site addresses of popular German taxis:

  • kiwitaxi.com;
  • taxi211211.de;
  • gettransfer.com.

If it is not possible to order a taxi, then at the exit from the terminals and in the city itself, most likely, several free cars will be waiting for you. It is important to remember that in this case, an unscrupulous driver can drive you at an inflated rate. We recommend using the carriers' Internet services in order to be able to compare offers and know the cost in advance.

We rent a car

If you need maximum mobility and do not want to adjust to the public transport schedule, you should consider renting a car. Car rental companies are located in different parts of the city and at the train station. Opening hours: daily from 7:00 to 23:00. It is best to book your car in advance at rentalcars.com. The interface supports Russian and converts prices in local currency.

To receive a rented car, the driver must meet a number of requirements:

  • age 21 years or more;
  • minimum driving experience of 3 years;
  • international driver's license.

A number of companies practice higher rates for young drivers. It is necessary to clarify the information when drawing up a lease agreement.

The cost of the service varies between 40-50 euros per day of rental and depends on the class of the car. When you get your car, take road B433 and head towards the airport for 30 minutes following the signs.

Bike rent

Hamburg is a well-organized city for cyclists. There are hundreds of Stadtrad Hamburg bike stations and beautiful, well-marked roads. To rent this type of transport, you should use the machine located near the parking lot, or activate the application on your smartphone.

As of 2021, the average daily rental price is 10–12 euros. There is also an hourly rate, and the first 30 minutes are free.

The bike ride from the city center takes about 35 minutes, and the bike station closest to the airport is 2 km away, at Röntgenstraße / Philips.

The advantage of this method of transportation is its independence from traffic jams. You can stop using the bike by leaving it at any free station within the city. More information on additional services can be found at stadtrad.hamburg.de.

Public transport - Hamburg's advantage

With a variety of public transport options, you can quickly reach Fuhlsbuettel Airport and await your flight. Such a trip usually takes no more than half an hour. The prices for the trip will not weigh down even the most economical travelers, who, most likely, have already spent on flights from Hamburg and do not mind saving money.
