New Yeni Havalimani Airport

Currently, 35 km from the city, the giant İstanbul Yeni Havalimani air port is being completed. Istanbul's new airport is almost three times the size of Ataturk - it has 114 airfield exits and is capable of handling up to 90 million passengers a year.

It is already partially in use, with full commissioning planned for March 2021. After that, Ataturk Airport will be closed and a city park will be arranged in its place, and its international code IST will be given to the new airport.

But the complete Yeni Havalimani project is much larger: it will be implemented until 2021, and after construction is completed, the airport will be able to serve up to 150 million passengers a year.

Conclusion

There are currently three operating airports in Istanbul: Ataturk, Sabiha Gokcen and the new Yeni Havalimani. Today, most flights arrive and depart from Ataturk and Sabiha airports. But these two airports are already struggling to cope with the current flow of passengers, and opportunities for their expansion have been exhausted. In March 2021, it is planned to launch a new airport, after which Ataturk will be closed and become part of history.
