Cyprus is one of the most popular holiday destinations for tourists due to its convenient geographical location and favorable natural and climatic conditions. Tourism in Cyprus annually brings 13% of GDP revenue, however due to the pandemic and the closure of borders, this tourist season, the island will lose 60% of foreign visitors.

Recall that the ban on flights was introduced in Cyprus on March 21, flights were banned: from Ukraine, Great Britain, Greece, Russia, Germany, Bahrain, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria and other countries.

Only freighter flights and humanitarian flights are allowed. Initially, the ban was in effect until April 30, but it was extended until May 28 due to the high incidence rate.

As of May 13, 903 cases of infection were recorded on the island, of which 16 were deaths, 449 people recovered.

The resort is very popular with citizens of the UK and Russia - countries with a high level of infection from Covid-19. Local authorities plan to attract tourists from regions with low morbidity - from the countries of the Persian Gulf and the Middle East.

According to the Minister of Health Konstantinos Ioannou, if the epidemiological situation improves, quarantine measures will be weakened on the island from June 9:

  • will resume international flights;
  • will open cafes, bars, restaurants;
  • ports that will serve cruise liners will start operating;
  • hotels will receive guests, subject to compliance with all preventive standards.
